Aquaponics Sysetm Productivity

What aquaponic system gives best results ?

A common question that comes to everyone interested in aquaponics at some point.

Backyard Aquaponics has been considerate enough to use three of their systems to the test to find the answer.

with three different water flow control systems being used, no one can predict the outcome.

The Systems:

System 1: Has an Auto Siphon, , the flow was too high to get the siphon working properly so they changed the 40mm drain fitting to a 50mm drain fitting, and as such larger internal pipework on the siphon, hopefully will work well with the 3000L/hour pump.

System 2:  Is constantly flooded and has been set up with a standpipe, it's running constantly flooded with the pump on all the time and flood level is about 1-2 inches below the surface of the clay.

System 3: Is flood & drain by a standpipe and timer and is running as per BYAP standard systems with a 15m on 45 minute off cycle.

Plants: Thyme, parsley, oregano, dill, chili, chives, celery, capsicum, spring onion, rainbow chard, and lettuce.

And after a month of maintaining them images from last three weeks are shown below.

It clearly becomes obvious the flood and drain mechanism using the timer is the best performer here and as per Joel's comments it also used the least amount of water.

So there you have it. Mystery solved.. There can be many other experiments that can be used with different settings but for now this gives everyone a clear idea.

Full details can be found on the BYAP Forum.
